Why Snakes Enter Garages — and What Actually Keeps Them Out

2026-05-14 · The Animal Control

Garage snake calls cluster around a few predictable causes. The snake almost never wants to be in your garage — it is following something, and once you remove the something, the snake stops coming.

Cause #1: the mouse trail

If mice or chipmunks are running the garage perimeter, a rat snake will follow that trail in. Garages with a dog-food bag in the corner, a bird-seed bag on a shelf, or an open compost pail nearby attract rodents — and rodents attract snakes. Solving the snake problem starts with solving the rodent problem.

Cause #2: the bottom of the garage door

An aging rubber sweep on a garage door is the single most common snake entry point we identify. As the rubber compresses and tears at the corners, a quarter-inch gap opens. That is plenty of room for a rat snake or copperhead to slide under, especially in the cool of an early morning. Replacing that sweep — and adding side-jamb seals — eliminates the entry.

Cause #3: thermal refuge

Concrete garage slabs hold heat into the evening. On a cool night in spring or fall, a snake looking for a thermal refuge will slide along a warm slab edge and tuck against the inside of the door. This is why so many garage snake sightings happen in the morning, not the afternoon.

The exclusion approach

On an inspection, we walk the garage perimeter for the bottom sweep, the side-jamb seals, the man-door threshold, the slab-to-wall expansion gap, and any utility penetrations. We tighten the rubber, seal the gaps, and identify whatever is producing the rodent trail. For the full background on biology and prevention, see our complete snake hub for North Alabama.

If the home backs up to woods or a creek, we usually find the entry within ten feet of where the lawn ends. Wooded Decatur lots see this pattern repeatedly each spring.

Things that do not work

Mothballs do not repel snakes — they are toxic to children and pets, and the snake walks past them. Sulfur powder, peppermint oil, and "ultrasonic" devices have no field evidence behind them either. Sealing the entry and removing the food source is the only approach that holds.
