Signs & Detection — What Animal Is in My Wall? Scratching Sounds at Night

Scratching in the walls at night is one of the most disturbing sounds a home can make — and one of the most diagnosable, if you know what to listen for. This guide walks through every common North Alabama scenario and what it means.

Quick diagnostic by time of day

  • Light scratching after dark, all night: mice or rats.
  • Heavy footsteps and dragging after dark: raccoons.
  • Dawn and dusk scratching, often gnawing: bats (dusk) or squirrels (dawn).
  • Daytime scratching: almost always squirrels.
  • Sounds only right at dusk: bats exiting the roost.

The "scratching" by species

Mice and rats

The most common cause. Mice produce a fast, light scratching — almost a scurrying — as they run along wall plates and pipe runs. Rats are larger and you may hear gnawing along with the movement. Rodents are nocturnal, so the noise is heaviest from late evening through pre-dawn. Diagnostic clue: droppings the size of rice grains (mice) or olives (rats) in nearby cabinets or attic spaces.

Squirrels

Squirrels are diurnal (day-active), and that timing is the #1 diagnostic. If you hear scratching at 7 a.m. or 4 p.m. but the house is quiet at night, you have squirrels. They scratch, gnaw, and produce light running sounds. Two activity peaks per year: February–March (first litter) and August–September (second litter) bring the heaviest squirrel noise.

Raccoons

Raccoons are nocturnal, heavy, and vocal. Footsteps are unmistakably heavy — almost human-crawling weight. If you hear something dragging across the attic, that's raccoon. If you hear actual vocalizations (chittering, growling, kit cries in spring), it's almost certainly a raccoon. See our full guide to raccoon sounds in the attic.

Bats

Bats don't really "scratch" — they squeak, rustle, and produce a distinctive flutter-like sound, especially at dusk as they exit the roost and at dawn as they return. If you hear noise only at dusk for a few minutes, that's a bat colony emergence. Bats are protected — read about why bat removal is regulated.

Birds

Birds in vents or eaves produce rustling and occasional vocalizations, almost always during daytime. Chimney swifts and starlings are the most common North Alabama culprits.

What to do tonight (at 2 a.m. when you're reading this)

  1. Do not block or seal anything. If there's an active animal in the wall, sealing it in will create a worse problem in 48–72 hours.
  2. Pinpoint the wall location and approximate height. Tape a small note marking where you heard it.
  3. If kids' rooms are involved or you're hearing scratching from a bedroom wall — particularly with squirrels in late winter or raccoons in spring — call professional removal in the morning. DIY rodent traps work for confirmed mice but not for the larger species.
  4. Check the exterior of the home in daylight: look for entry points along the soffit, ridge, foundation vents, and chimney. A descriptive call to a wildlife operator with that information shortens the inspection.

When it's time to call

Any combination of these means call a wildlife professional, not a pest-control company:

  • You can hear an animal larger than a mouse.
  • You hear vocalizations.
  • You hear it during the day and at night (multiple species).
  • You smell anything — wildlife urine or guano build up fast.
  • You're seeing damage on the exterior (torn soffit, lifted shingles, chewed fascia).

We work this every night across Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, and the surrounding North Alabama corridor. Most jobs scheduled within 24–48 hours.
